Where did you go to college, and are you doing today what you thought you’d be doing then?
I went to Kenyon College and no, I am not doing what I thought I would be doing because I was totally clueless and had no idea what I wanted to be doing professionally! I will say that the one thing I knew I wanted was a family and I am blessed to have achieved that goal with my wife and two kids.
Describe a typical day at the office.
Like a pin ball in a pinball machine, I bounce from call to email to text to email to call to tour to meeting to proposal to lease review to call to email to text to proposal to . . . I am exhausted.
Why did a career in commercial real estate appeal to you?
It was the late 1980s and there was a looming feeling of renaissance in Cleveland. I wanted to be part of that revitalization and was attracted to the physical development of the community.
What deal/project are you most proud of?
In 1999, I represented the purchase of the Bingham Building on West 9th that, at the time, resulted in the largest historic tax credit project ever in the State of Ohio. The conversion of this 900,000 sq. ft. building from industrial use to apartments helped to energize the now successful warehouse district as a residential community.
What characteristics do you think make someone in your field successful?
Vision to see the opportunities that others do not; an ability to visualize how a space can be utilized; firm understanding of the financial aspects of a deal; and a willingness and ability to interact with different types of people.
What is your favorite thing about working at Allegro?
I enjoy being part of a team which allows for the sharing of ideas, and where all oars feel as if they are pulling in the same shared direction. I also am appreciative of the uniqueness of Allegro in that we have a high percentage of both younger people and women working on our team.
What makes Allegro different from other brokerages?
We work for the collective benefit of the firm. Because of our salaried pay structure, we are able to provide the highest level of service to our clients. All boats rise with the tide! Clients receive the benefit of everyone’s expertise, even if that expertise is only required for a small portion of the project. We don’t need to negotiate shared commissions to get another broker to provide assistance on a project, which may act as a deterrent for information sharing at other firms.
Do you participate in any philanthropic organizations or events?
I am Board President of the Shaker Heights Development Corporation which works to enhance the commercial districts in Shaker Heights. I serve on the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Community Relations Committee. And, I work on some projects for the North Union Farmers Market.
Where would you love to vacation (with no budget or time constraints!)?
I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii and Alaska, as well as Southeast Asia and New Zealand.
Tell us a little about your family.
I have an awesome wife, Ann, of 26 years. She is a great listener and gives so much to our community through her work at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and the various nonprofit organizations for which she has served. I have a 24-year-old daughter who graduated from Bates College in Maine and is currently living in rural Georgia. She is a world traveler and lover of differing cultures and local farming. Finally, I have a 22-year-old son graduating from Syracuse University in May 2018 with an early childhood special needs teaching degree. He is looking to graduate school in the fall to further this specialization.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Swimming, walking/hiking, following Cleveland sports, traveling, gardening, and occasionally just chillin’ on the couch.
